Shopify Commerce Awards 2020

Announced in December 2020, applications closed January 31, 2021, winners recognized in 2021.

The Shopify Commerce Awards is Shopify's big recognition program for its partner and developer ecosystem. The 2020 edition was fully digital (thanks, COVID), had to work within strict legal eligibility rules across multiple countries, and needed to generate real excitement during a year when a lot of partners were stretched thin.

What I did

Program design: I worked with Product Designers, Developers, Marketing, Partner Marketing, Legal, Data, UX, and Social to design the whole thing, including the scoring matrix and executive judges panel.

Legal and eligibility: The contest was global but only certain countries were eligible. I wrote messaging that communicated the rules clearly and kindly, so excluded partners didn't feel like they'd been told to get lost.

Internal comms: I wrote and copy-edited messaging and helped key stakeholders and execs share updates. The goal was to build awareness and momentum during and after the contest.

Winner storytelling: I worked with Video and Content to tell the winners' stories internally and externally, making sure their work got the spotlight it deserved.

The numbers

  • Nearly 3,000 submissions across three categories (UX + FED, App + Development, and Overall Builds)
  • 9 winners recognized
  • Past winners reported more app installs, new client inquiries, and stronger credibility in the ecosystem
